The sound of running water usually helps. If you do hear it follow it to the source/ leak. If there is a water stain in the ceiling or dripping down the leak is most probably directly there in that area above. Sometimes, water may run along a joist and then stain or drip at an area some distance from the actual leak. If there is a stain in the wall that usually means there is a leak in a section of pipe. If you receive a higher than normal water bill it may just be the first indication of a leaking pipe. You may also hear the sound of running water even when all your fixtures are closed (turned off). If you suspect a leak check the fixtures first to make sure all faucets are tightly closed. Then go to the water meter and see if the dial is moving. If in the kitchen sink you have a garbage disposal foul odors tend to occur from a buildup of food debris within the sinks garbage disposal. To eliminate this odor, simply place ice cubes and lemon peels in the disposal and run it for a minute. Next squirt a little liquid dish detergent into the disposal whil it is still running. Never stick your hands or items in disposal while its running. Finally, run cold water for another minute to rinse the debris away. Foul odors in the bathroom usually comes from when the water evaporates from the traps in the fixutres. The plumbing system is designed to prevent odors from entering the residence by means of a trap attached to fixtures. These traps contain water to seal out the foul odors. To solve this problem simply make sure there is water in the traps by pouring a bucket of water in each trap, sink, shower, and floor drain. This should prevent odors from entering the residence.

• Once a week try to run hot water down the bathroom drain to keep it free-flowing.
• To remove mineral deposits from your shower head, put one cup of vinegar in a plastic bag and tie it over the shower head with a twist tie and leave it over night. The next day remove the bag and wipe it down with a rag, preferably damp.
• Never put hard to grind wastes in the kitchen sink garbage disposal. Run cold water down the drain for 30 seconds before and after use.
• Don’t pour liquid grease such as cooking oils down the drain.
• Septic tanks in average should be inspected and pumped every 2 to 4 years to help prevent costly replacements of the filter fields.
• Once a year drain several gallons of water from the water heater tank to remove sediment buildup that can cause corrosion and reduce heating efficiency.
